Sheffield

Nestled in the foothills of Mount Roland, Sheffield is a small dairy farming town that serves as a gateway to Cradle Mountain and Lake Barrington. While it’s long been renowned for its high-quality butterfat products, sustainable lamb and beef production, it’s the town’s murals that are now putting it on the map. Transforming Sheffield into an artistic hub was the vision of local Brian Inder, who saw the first murals painted in the 1980s.

Today, more than 140 murals depicting Sheffield’s rich history and natural surrounds adorn the town’s buildings and winners of the previous year’s Mural Fest Painting Competition are showcased in Mural Park. Artists working in a variety of mediums have also set up studios and workshops in the town, with many open to the public. Whether you’re into photography, glass art or woodcraft, Sheffield’s galleries provide a source of inspiration.

For an insight into the people and events that have shaped Sheffield, head to the Kentish Museum where vintage agricultural equipment, shop fittings and pioneer artefacts are on display. It’s also a fascinating destination for learning about the Mersey-Forth hydroelectric scheme and its impact on the local area.

In the nearby community of Promised Land, you’ll find Tasmazia and the Village of Lower Crackpot, a family-friendly spot featuring eight mazes, a model village and an ever-popular pancake parlour. Sheffield also serves as a base for scenic drives through the Kentish region, with the rugged peak of Mount Roland providing a magnificent backdrop.
