Taxis in Tasmania
Taxi services are available in all of Tasmania’s major hubs, including Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie, as well as Ulverstone and Perth. They can be hired from taxi ranks at airports, bus stations and inner city/town areas or hailed while passing on the street. You can also phone and book a taxi directly with a company or through their app.
In addition to standard taxi sedans and station wagons that can seat up to four passengers, Tasmanian taxis include people movers that can carry up to 11 people. If required, you can also book wheelchair accessible taxis in Tasmania, which are otherwise known as “maxi taxis”.
The flagfall for a standard taxi in Tasmania is around $3.90, with a charge of between $2.00 and $2.50 per kilometre on top of that. For high-occupancy vehicles (5+ people), the flagfall is $5.30, and the tariff per kilometre ranges from $2.30 to $2.75.
Rideshare services in Tasmania
Rideshare services are a convenient option for short trips in Tasmania’s urban hubs, including Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie. Much like a taxi driver, a rideshare driver will transport you to your chosen destination for a set fare, with the main difference being that they are using their own vehicles, rather than one owned by a taxi company. For most rideshare services, you need to book and sign up via an app, which also allows you to check on the reliability of a driver based on previous riders’ reviews.
Uber is available in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie, while Ola can be used for getting around Hobart and Launceston. Australian-owned company Oscar has also moved into Tasmania, with drivers available in most of the major cities.
