Public Buses in Tasmania
With no passenger rail services on the island, buses are the main means of getting around Tasmania if you’re without a car. Bus services are comfortable and efficient, although departure times can change due to seasonal demand, so it’s a good idea to check directly with the transport provider when making plans.
Suburban buses in Tasmania
MetroTas is the main transport provider within the cities of Hobart, Launceston and Burnie and operates an extensive network of routes that connect most of the local attractions. Its website provides a user-friendly resource for finding timetables and maps, as well as ticket prices. Long-distance buses in Tasmania
In southern Tasmania, Tassie Link operates services from Hobart to the Tasman Peninsula and along the East Coast, as well as to Richmond/Campania and the Huon Valley.
In northern Tasmania, they run buses between Burnie and the West Coast towns of Queenstown and Strahan, as well as having a service that connects Evandale with Perth, Longford and Cressy.
An alternative bus for accessing the Tasman Peninsula is Tassie Tours, which runs a Port Arthur shuttle bus, including a stop at the spectacular Pirate’s Bay Lookout
Taking over from Redline, Kinetic is now the main long-distance transport provider in Tasmania and runs intercity services between Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport. There are multiple departures each day, and tickets can be booked in advance via their website.
Kinetic also operates buses travelling between Hobart, Sorell and Dodges Ferry, as well as services from Hobart through the Derwent Valley to New Norfolk.
If you’re travelling to or from the West Coast, there is a bus service to Hobart via Derwent Bridge on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Strahan to Burnie bus (via Queenstown) operates 7 days a week and can be combined with an intercity service to reach Hobart.
In the northwest of Tasmania, Kinetic has taken over from Mersey Link to operate services connecting Devonport with Latrobe, Port Sorell, Ulverstone, Latrobe and Sheffield.
McDermott’s Coaches offers scheduled services between Launceston and Cradle Mountain, including pick up from your chosen accommodation. They also operate the “Cradle Discoverer”, a purpose-built, hybrid diesel-electric bus that transports visitors between the Cradle Mountain National Park visitor centre and Dove Lake.
In addition to the above-mentioned bus services in Tasmania, Area Connect operates several routes that help rural communities across the state stay connected. These include a Bothwell to Glenorchy bus, a Colebrook to Hobart bus, an Ellendale to New Norfolk bus and an Ouse to New Norfolk bus. Please be aware that these services are infrequent, operating only once a week or once a month.
