Ulverstone

Positioned at the mouth of the River Leven, Ulverstone is a bustling coastal town overlooking Bass Strait. It was settled in 1848 by the Risby family, who had arrived in Australia nine years earlier from the English town of Horsley. At the time, the area was known as the Leven and provided high-quality timber for the Victorian gold rush. In 1854, the Ulverstone store was established by Hugh Ross McKay and the town has used this name ever since.

Ulverstone’s agricultural past is on display at the Ulverstone History Museum where you’ll find vintage tools and photographs depicting pioneering life. A handful of antique and secondhand book stores cluster in the town centre, together with relaxed cafes and global eateries. A short drive inland from Ulverstone is the Gunns Plains Cave where you’ll be greeted by majestic stalactites and stalagmites.

For panoramic views across the town, head to the award-winning gardens that zigzag their way up Maud Street or stretch your legs along one of Ulverstone’s coastal walking trails. There are plenty of family-friendly beaches where you can relax in the warmer months and cruises make their way up the Leven River for picnic lunches. The estuary is also renowned for its exceptional birdwatching, with sightings of azure kingfishers a highlight.
