Dominated by the flat-topped summit of Table Cape, Wynyard is a laid-back seaside town on Tasmania’s northwest coast. It lies where the Inglis River meets Bass Strait and was named after the British Army officer, Edward Buckley Wynyard, who visited the settlement in the early 1850s. Today, Wynyard is a popular setting for river fishing and a variety of beach activities, as well as being the gateway to several scenic drives.

Stroll through the heart of Wynyard to explore its antique stores or grab a coffee at one of the friendly local cafes. On the first and third Sunday of every month, the Wynyard Foreshore Market takes place, offering a diversity of locally produced goods.

While exploring the town, you can’t miss Table Cape, the remains of a 12-million-year-old volcano that offers spectacular views from its lookout. Rising to 180 metres in height, it is topped by a historic lighthouse, which can be accessed along a clifftop trail. Table Cape is also home to a famous tulip farm that ignites with colourful blooms each spring.

Between Wynyard and Table Cape is Fossil Bluff, an impressive cliff face where the remains of prehistoric whales and Australia’s oldest marsupial fossils have been discovered. After exploring the site, why not take a dip at nearby Freestone Cove Beach or enjoy a round at the adjacent Wynyard Golf Club?
