How to Book a Permit for the Overland Track
Planning to hike Tasmania’s legendary Overland Track? One of the first and most important steps is securing your Overland Track permit. If you're walking the full trail from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair between 1 October and 31 May, you'll need to book in advance, as permits are limited and regulated to protect this world-famous wilderness.
What You Need to Know:
Permits are required during the main season (1 October – 31 May)
Walkers must hike north to south (Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair)
The Overland Track fee is in addition to your Parks Pass
Your permit confirms your start date and cannot be changed once you’re on the trail
Daily numbers are capped, so booking early is essential
When to Book:
Permits open in early July each year for the upcoming season. If you're aiming for popular dates—especially December, January, or over Easter—book as early as possible to secure your preferred start.
Where to Book:
You can book your permit directly with the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service:

After Booking Your Permit – Plan Your Transport
Once your permit is locked in, the next step is arranging your Overland Track shuttle and return transport.
1. Book Your Overland Track Shuttle
Start your hike stress-free with reliable transport from Launceston to Cradle Mountain, and book your return from Lake St Clair back to Launceston. The shuttle is designed for Overland hikers and includes secure luggage storage, local advice, and convenient pickup options.

2. Consider Taking the Lake St Clair Ferry
To skip the final walk along Lake St Clair (17.5km of forested track), many hikers opt to take the Lake St Clair ferry across the lake to Cynthia Bay. It’s a scenic and relaxing way to finish your trek.
